All motor vehicles in Maryland must be registered with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA). This registration ensures that your car meets the legal and safety requirements to drive on Maryland roads. This process can be confusing, and as your Kia dealer, we’d like to tell you more about how car registration works and how much it costs. Advice From Your Kia Dealer: Cost and Requirements for Car Registration

Why You Need to Register

All vehicles, whether new or old, must have a valid registration in Maryland. Registration is different from your certificate of title. When you buy your car from us, you’ll receive the certificate of title. This certificate confirms that you are the legal owner of the car, but it doesn’t allow you to drive it. Your registration proves that your vehicle meets all the requirements to drive in Maryland.

How Much Does Your Registration Cost?

Registration costs vary depending on the type of vehicle you have. If you’re titling your car at the same time, there is an additional $100.00 MVA charge for title registration.

How Often Do You Need to Register?

The MVA requires every vehicle to be registered every two years. Your first registration must be within 30 days of buying your car from us. After that, they email you a reminder when it is time that your registration is due again. When you register, the MVA will send you a confirmation and provide you with your tags for the license plate.

What Do You Require for Your Registration?

When you buy your Kia, we’ll help you complete all the required documentation and submit it to the MVA for you. The MVA will then send you confirmation of your registration. If you prefer to complete the documents yourself, we’ve listed some required documents below.

If You Bought a New Kia from Us, You’ll Need:

  • Application for Certificate of Title (Form VR-005)
  • Proof of Insurance for your Kia
  • Certificate of Title proving ownership
  • Bill of Sale (Form VR-181)
  • Lien and lienholder information (Only if you have a lien on your car)

If You Bought a Used Vehicle from Us, You’ll Also Need:

  • An odometer disclosure statement
  • Maryland Safety Inspection Certificate
